Local History Collection

Rio Rancho Estates 4.1963The Rio Rancho Local History Collection has developed over several years and continues to grow with donations of books, posters, flyers, and memorabilia from generous community members. The collection contains is housed in the Local History Room located in the southeast corner of the Loma Colorado Main Library.

Rio Rancho Turns 40!

Digitization of the local history collection began in 2019. Click here to view a catalog of current digital images.

Exhibits including photographs, maps, posters, and other items are on display in the Local History Room.

Oral Histories
The library conducts interviews with individuals who have Rio Rancho stories to share. The oral histories are available in the Local History Room.

Books & Collections
Books, manuscripts, videotapes, posters, flyers, and other materials in the Local History Room cover topics such as Rio Rancho history, current and past demographics, and other local statistics.

Local Newspapers
The collection includes two local newspapers, the Rio Rancho Observer (1973 - 2017 on DVD), and the Rio Rancho Roadrunner (1975 - 1981 on DVD). Patrons may use public PCs to view the DVDs. Please see the adult information desk for assistance.

Owing to the nature of the collection, local history items may not be checked out. The collection is secured in locked cabinets in the temperature controlled Local History Room. Please be aware that some items require special handling, including wearing gloves. If required, gloves will be supplied.

We welcome donations to the Local History Collection relating to the history of Rio Rancho. Acceptable donations include photographs, books, yearbooks, old phone books, posters, flyers, papers, and other memorabilia. Please contact the Loma Colorado Main Library reference desk for more information at 505-891-5013, ext. 3033.

The Local History Room is available during regular library hours. Books and other materials are listed in the library catalog and can be identified with the location Loma Colorado Local History. If you would like to use materials or see the collection, a librarian will be able to assist you. You may be required to leave your ID or library card at the information desk while you conduct your research.
