Great American Cleanup Tree Seedling Giveaway
Register for the Great American Cleanup, obtain free tree seedlings, tree-planting information, and learn water conservation tips--including how to fix water leaks--on Saturday, March 30, 2019, from 11 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Loma Colorado Main Library, 755 Loma Colorado Blvd. in Rio Rancho.
The free tree seedlings that will be available include Austrian pine, lacebark elm, Rocky Mountain penstemon, and lilac. Seedlings will be prepackaged, three per bag, available on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last. The limit will be one bag per household, proof of Rio Rancho residency is required.
Attendees can also register for the upcoming Great American Cleanup events that will be held on May 4, 11, and 18, be entered to win one of three trees, and receive a Dilly Bar, courtesy of Otero's Dairy Queen. You must be present to pick up the seedlings, and distribution will take place on the library patio and may be canceled due to inclement weather.
Inside the library and on the back patio there will be:
•Special display of books related to water and tree conservation issues
•Information on how to become a tree steward (community urban forestry initiative)
•Free showerheads, faucet aerators, and toilet dye tablets, while supplies last
For more information about the event, please call the City of Rio Rancho’s Keep Rio Rancho Beautiful Division at (505) 896-8389 or Loma Colorado Main Library at (505) 891-5013, ext. 3033.
Planting tree seedlings helps build the City’s urban canopy, which provides shade and natural cooling, and improved quality of life. One full-grown tree generates enough oxygen to sustain two human beings.
Citizens can lower their water use and reduce water bills by finding and fixing water leaks. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reminds citizens to check their plumbing fixtures and irrigation systems during national Fix a Leak Week, March 18-24, 2018. Additional information about national Fix a Leak Week can be found at http://www.epa.gov/watersense/our_water/fix_a_leak.html.
The event is coordinated by the City of Rio Rancho’s Keep Rio Rancho Beautiful Division, Water Conservation Office, and Library and Information Services Division. Keep Rio Rancho Beautiful is a division of the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department. The Water Conservation Office is part of the Utilities Department. This event is also made possible by New Mexico Clean & Beautiful, a division of the state’s Department of Tourism, and Keep America Beautiful, Inc.
